Do you feel a sharp or nagging pain in your shoulder when you lift your arm, comb your hair, or reach for something
on a shelf? Many people ignore it, thinking it’s due to sleeping wrong or overuse. But often, this pain comes from a small yet important shoulder muscle called the supraspinatus.
Inside your shoulder, there are four muscles that help you move and stabilize your arm. One of them is the supraspinatus muscle. When this muscle or its tendon gets irritated or inflamed, it leads to supraspinatus tendinitis.
DOs (What You Should Do)
Do rest the shoulder, but don’t completely stop all movement
Do use ice for 15–20 minutes, 2–3 times a day to reduce pain
Do gentle shoulder movements as advised by a physiotherapist
Do warm up before exercise or work
Do seek early physiotherapy if pain lasts more than a few days
Do listen to your pain — mild discomfort is okay, sharp pain is not
DON’Ts (What You Should Avoid)
Don’t lift heavy objects overhead
Don’t do sudden jerky shoulder movements
Don’t continue gym exercises through pain
Don’t apply heat in the early painful stage
Don’t keep your arm in one position for too long
